Neon is a colourless and odourless inert monoatomic gas. The density of Ne is about two-thirds of the density of the air. Let us read about some uses of neon in the article below.
Neon (Ne) is a noble gas with the atomic number 10. Although Ne is very common in the universe. Ne is a rare element or gas on earth. The industrial uses of Ne are mentioned below:
- Florescent lights
- Lasers
- Electronics
- Preservation
Fluorescent Lights
- Ne is filled in the tubes of neon lights to provide yellowish-red coloured fluorescence.
- Ne is used in vacuum, television and wavemeter tubes.
- Ne gas is used in automotive lighting, locomotive lighting and traffic signal lights.
Lasers
- Neon and helium are mixed to make lasers.
- Neon gas has also started to be used as a power source for the lasers of EUV lithography.
Electronics
- Neon is used as a cryogenic refrigerator in its liquid form and the temperature attained for refrigeration is much more than that can be attained in a liquid-helium refrigerator.
- Ne can be used as a high-voltage indicator and lightning arrester.
- Ne is used in diving gears and equipment.
Preservation
- As Ne is an inert gas; therefore, it is used to preserve biological specimens.
Conclusion:
This article concludes that Ne is highly inert to any chemical reaction and commercial use is found in fluorescent tubes filled with neon gas to produce yellowish-red light with a buzzing sound. Ne use is now regulated due to its less availability and expansiveness.
