Mercury bromide (HgBr2) is an inorganic, white crystalline powder highly soluble in water. Let us have a look at the industrial use of Mercury bromide.
The different uses of HgBr2 are listed below-
- Water treatment
- Chemical analysis
- Maintain Ultra-high purity of crystals
Here, we will be discussing all the uses in detail.
Water treatment
- Mercury bromide helps to maintain the acidic and basic pH of water.
- HgBr2 is soluble in water and is used to make the water free from mercury (Hg) which is highly toxic for drinking.
Chemical analysis
- For the detection of different metals like arsenic (Ar), Mercury bromide is used.
- Mercury bromide is used as a reagent in some reactions for glycoside linkage for making carbohydrates (-COOH).
Maintain Ultra-high purity of crystals
HgBr2 is used to purify crystals for nanoscale elements powder and suspensions.
Conclusion
Mercury bromide is highly toxic and should be used in a significantly less amounts in industries, it is highly soluble in ethanol (CH3-OH) due to its high melting point and boiling point.
