NOF Lewis Structure & Characteristics: 17 Complete Facts

Illustration of valence electrons on any molecule in the form of line and dots are known as Lewis structure. Let us discuss some important facts of NOF lewis structure below.

NOF lewis structure is a triatomic structure containing three atoms nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine atoms. Nitrogen atom is at central position due to its lowest electronegativity value. Nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine atoms bonded to each other with single covalent sigma bonds shown with lines.

The extra electrons gain the position on all the nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine atoms as lone pair electrons shown by dots. NOF is the chemical formula of nitrosyl fluoride. This lewis structure consists of all non – metallic elements. Let us discuss the shape, angle, hybridization and many more details of NOF lewis structure and its characteristics.

How to draw NOF lewis structure?

To predict the valence electrons of NOF in the form of lewis structure need to follow some steps given below. Let us see the steps to draw NOF lewis structure in brief.

Valence electron calculation and central atom position:

Calculate the total valence electrons on NOF lewis structure by addition of all N, O, and F atom’s valence electrons. Place the least electronegative atom at the central position. Here, the nitrogen atom is the central atom as it is least electronegative than O and F.

Lone electron pair and Octet rule:

Valence electrons which are left after covalent bonding between N, O and F are placed first on outer atoms and then on the central atom as lone pair electrons. Afterward, apply the octet rule on each atom to find their complete or incomplete octets.

Formal charge calculation and Shape:

Calculate the NOF lewis structure formal charge by using the given formula. Later find its shape and geometry, bond angle, and hybridization.

NOF valence electrons

Outermost shell or orbital of any atom containing electrons is referred to as valence electrons. Let us take a look at a brief description of NOF structure valence electrons.

Total 18 valence electrons are present in NOF lewis structure. N atom has 5 valence electrons due to its position in 15th periodic table group. O atom has 6 electrons as it belongs to 16th group in periodic table. F atom has 7 valence electrons due to its position in 17th group of periodic table.

Below are the steps to calculate the valence electrons on the NOF lewis structure.

  • Addition of valence electrons N, O and F atoms = ( 5 + 6 + 7 ) = 18.
  • Total valence electrons on NOF lewis structure is = 18.
  • Electron pair is determined by dividing valence electron of NOF by 2 = 18 / 2 =  9
  • Therefore, NOF lewis structure has eighteen valence electrons and nine electron pairs.

NOF lewis structure lone pairs

The non – bonding electrons on any lewis structure shown by dots are known as lone pair electrons of that structure. Take a brief look at NOF lone pair electrons below.

NOF lewis structure involves 7 lone pair of electrons. There are 18 valence electrons in NOF. Four electrons engaged as bond pairs forming two sigma bonds within O and N ( O – N ) and N and F ( N – F ). Left over 14 unshared electrons placed on all N, O and F atoms as non – bonding electrons.

These 14 non – bonding electrons on NOF get paired as 7 lone pair electrons. Oxygen atom has three lone pairs, nitrogen atom has one lone pair and fluorine atom has three lone pair of electrons. Hence, 3 + 1 + 3 = 7 lone pair electrons are available on NOF lewis structure.

NOF lewis structure octet rule

The stability of any atom determines with the presence of 8 electrons which is explained in octet rule. Below is the deep explanation on NOF lewis structure octet rule.

NOF lewis structure has both complete and incomplete octets. Oxygen and fluorine atom of NOF has complete octets while nitrogen atom contains incomplete octet.  N atom has only 6 electrons with two bond pairs and one lone pair. So, nitrogen atom shows incomplete octet.

Oxygen and fluorine atoms have 8 electrons around it. They have six non- bonding electrons and two bond pair electron. Thus, both O and F atom of NOF shows ( 6 NBE + 2 BE = 8 E) electrons with complete octets.

NOF lewis structure formal charge

Formal charge is some positive or negative charge on atoms of any structure due to which it is being stable. Here, we are discussing on NOF lewis structure formal charge.

Formal charge of NOF lewis structure is = (valence electrons – non-bonding electrons – ½ bonding electrons)

The calculated values of NOF lewis structure formal charge is given in the below table.

Atoms of NOF lewis structureValence electrons on O, N and FNon – bonding electrons on O, N and FBonding electrons on O, N and FFormal charge on O, N and F

NOF lewis structure resonance

The various forms of shown by same molecules having similar atomic place with different bonding and charge is the resonance structure. Let us discuss on NOF resonance.

NOF lewis structure shows only one resonating structure. This is the stable form of NOF lewis structure due to the minimization of charge on O and N atoms to zero. It get possible as the 2 electron on O atom gets moved to form double bonds between O and N atoms (O=N).

NOF lewis structure shape

The chemical compound can form shape according to the arrangement of its atoms and bonding. Let us see below some discussion on NOF lewis structure shape.

NOF lewis structure has bent shape and trigonal planar geometry. The NOF molecule shows that the central N atom joined with two bonding atoms O and F. Also it has one lone pair electron on central N atom. Thus it follows the AX2E generic formula of VSEPR theory.

NOF hybridization

Mixing and recasting of orbitals of atoms of same compound forming new hybrid orbital with equivalent energy is hybridization. Take a brief look on NOF hybridization.

NOF lewis structure has sp2 hybridization. The central N atom of NOF has steric number 3. Steric number = bonded atoms on central N atom + N atom lone pair electrons, so 2 + 1 = 3. Thus, as per VSEPR theory the NOF has sp2 hybridization due to its 3 steric number.

In NOF, there is the mixing and recasting of 1 ‘s’ and 2 ‘p’ orbitals of central N atom to form new sp2 hybrid orbitals of equal energy.

NOF lewis structure angle

Angle within alternate bonds in any molecule or structure is known as bond angle. Let us have a brief description on NOF lewis structure bond angle.

NOF lewis structure consists of 1200 bond angle. There is a linkage of covalent bonds between central N atom and bonded O and F two atoms. Also the central atoms have one lone pair electron on it. Due to which repulsion creates and the O – N – F bond angle gets bent as V – shaped.

Is NOF a solid?

The compounds having particular shape due to close packing of its atoms are known as solids. Below is the brief discussion on NOF molecule’s solid nature.

NOF compound is not solid in nature. It is basically a gaseous compound. On mixing the NOF gas with water it can used as a solvent. It does not have closed packing of its atoms and thus it cannot form a particular shape like crystalline solids.

Is NOF soluble in water?

Any compound gets soluble in water due to its ionization and bonding with ions of water molecules. Let us discuss about NOF solubility in water.

NOF gas can soluble in water. When NOF is added to water, it gets reacts with water to produce nitrous acid and hydrogen fluoride. This nitrous acid further produced nitric acid with nitrogen monoxide and remove water molecules.

The reaction of NOF with water is denotes as:

  • NOF + H2O → HNO2 + HF
  • 3 HNO2 → HNO3 + 2 NO + H2O

Is NOF polar or nonpolar?

Polarity shows the presence (polar) or absence (non – polar) of dipoles in the molecule. Below is the discussion on NOF polar or non – polar nature.

NOF is a polar molecule. NOF has more electronegativity difference between central N atom and two bonding O and F atoms. Electronegativity difference of O – N is 0.4 and O – F is 0.98. Thus the electron cloud develops on more electronegative F and O atoms.

Why NOF is polar?

NOF is polar compound. Due to unequal sharing of electrons in NOF molecule it is polar. It has The O and F atom pulls the electron density towards itself. Central N atom has partial positive charge and outer both O and F atoms has partial negative charge creates dipoles on NOF molecule.

Is NOF a molecular compound?

Compounds with covalent bonds and having small molecules in its structure are molecular or covalent compounds. Let us discuss about molecular nature of NOF compound.

NOF is a molecular compound. The NOF structure contains two covalent O –N and O – F bonds in its unstable form. The stable form of NOF molecule contains one O=N double bond and one O – F single covalent bond. Due to presence of strong covalent bonding it is not easy to break the bonds of NOF.

Is NOF an acid or base?

Proton donors are acids and proton acceptors are bases. Below is the detailed explanation on NOF acidic or basic nature.

NOF is non – acidic or non – basic compound. It is an oxidizing agent and used as a oxidizer. Acidic compounds can behave as oxidizing agents which depends on its central non – metals oxidation number.

If the central non – metal of any acid has high oxidation state then it can be oxidizing agent. But oxidizing agents cannot behave like acid or base.

Is NOF an electrolyte?

The compounds which gets ionised on added to water and conduct electricity are known as electrolytes. Let us discuss in brief on NOF electrolytic nature.

NOF is not an electrolyte. It is not ionic and cannot produce ions when mixed in water. NOF is a covalent or molecular compound containing two sigma covalent bonds. Thus on getting mixed with water and on application of external electricity, it cannot conduct electricity.

Is NOF a salt?

The reaction between acids and base generally produced salts which are crystalline powder. Here we are discussing on NOF is a salt or not.

NOF is a gas and not a salt. NOF is not the product of acid – base reaction. NOF is produced with reaction between nitrogen monoxide and fluorine. It is gaseous in nature and behaves as oxidizing agent. It does not show any property of salt and thus it is not a salt.

Conclusion:

NOF lewis structure has 18 valence electrons and 7 lone pair electrons. It has complete octets of O and F atoms while incomplete octets of central N atom. It has formal charge of +2 on N and -1 on O while 0 on F atom. It has bent shape and trigonal planar geometry with sp2 hybridization and 1200 bond angle. NOF is oxidizing agent, water soluble and polar.
