Hydrochloric acid when reacted with calcium chloride then the reaction follows a simple inorganic mechanism. Calcium chloride is basic salt so it can react with acids like hydrochloric. The reaction takes place at room temperature and standard pressure.

The reaction between HCl + CaCl2 is a displacement reaction along with some redox and acid-buffer reaction is also involved. The Ca element are displaced from its chloride salt and chlorine is oxidized here.

3. How to balance HCl + CaCl2?

We can see CaCl2 + HCl = HCl2 + Ca reaction is not balanced as L.H.S. and R.H.S. have not same number of molecules, let us balance this equation in the following way,

  • Step 1- Each individual molecules are labelled as A, B, C, and D as four elements are present.
  • A CaCl2 + B HCl = C HCl2 + D Ca
  • Step 2 – Now we using the equation by the suitable number which are the coefficient of reactants as well as products.
  • Ca = A = D, Cl = 2A + B = 2C, H = B = C
  • Step 3- all the variable and coefficients are calculated by the Gauss elimination method and we get,
  • A = 1, B = 2, C = 2, and D =1
  • So, overall balanced equation will be, CaCl2 + 2HCl = 2HCl2 + Ca

4. HCl + CaCl2 titration

In the titration reaction of the hydrochloric acid versus calcium chloride, we can follow several conditions, reagents, and apparatus which are discussed below,

Apparatus used

Burette, pipette, conical flask, burette holder, volumetric flask, and two beakers.

Titre and titrant

In this titration, we use hydrochloric acid as titrant filled in the burette and the molecule will be analyzed as calcium chloride as titer was taken in a conical flask.

Indicator

We use methyl orange (which is green in basic pH and violate in acidic pH) or phenolphthalein (which is pink in basic pH and colorless in acidic medium).

Procedure

The burette is filled with standardized hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride is taken in a conical flask. We Start the reaction from the burette by dropwise addition of acid and at the endpoint when the indicator changes its color then the titration will be done and calcium will get free.

Repeat the same process atleast for three to get correct result and not down the value to a notebook and then calculation with the formula V1S1 = V2S2 to find the volume of calcium.

5. HCl + CaCl2 net ionic equation

The net ionic equation of the HCl + CaCl2 is the formation of chloride ion along with hydrochloride acid. The acid will be ionized as proton and chloride ion, and calcium chloride salt will be ionized as Ca2+ and Cl which can be shown below,

H+ + Cl + Ca2+ + 2Cl = Cl + H+ + Cl + 2Ca

6. HCl + CaCl2 conjugate pairs

The conjugate pair of the reaction between HCl + CaCl2 is the conjugate base hydrochloric acid and the respective conjugate acid of the salt, which is shown below,

The reaction between HCl + CaCl2 is a redox reaction because calcium is reduced here by donating electrons and chloride is oxidized to getting electrons. Actually, oxidation number of Ca get decreased and for chlorine increased.
