15 Facts on HBr+ZnCO3: What, How To Balance & FAQs

Hydrobromic acid and Zinc carbonate are inorganic compounds with chemical formulas HBr and ZnCO3. Let us explore more about the reaction between HBr and ZnCO3.

Hydrogen Bromide is colorless, corrosive, and highly soluble in water. Zinc carbonate consists of white crystals but it is insoluble in water and soluble in alkalis and some acids. The reaction between a strong acid and metal carbonate results in the formation of metal salt, carbon dioxide, and water.

In this article we will learn about the final product, reaction enthalpy, buffer, molecular forces, etc of HBr+ZnCO3.

What is the product of HBr+ZnCO3?

Zinc bromide (ZnBr2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O) are formed in the reaction between ZnCO3 and HBr.

ZnCO3+2HBr=ZnBr2+CO2+H2O

What type of reaction is HBr+ZnCO3?

HBr and ZnCO3 is a double replacement reaction. Because here the two reactants exchanges the cations or anions to yield new products

How to balance HBr+ZnCO3?

HBr and ZnCO3 equation can be balanced using the following steps.

The general equation for the reaction is

  • HBr+ZnCO3=ZnBr2+CO2+H2O
  • First, calculate the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side
  • Here the number of atoms of Zn on the reactant side and product side is equal
  • The number of atoms of C in the reactant side and product side is equal
  • The number of atoms of O in the reactant side and product side is equal.
  • The number of atoms of H in the reactant side and product side is not equal
  • The number of atoms of Br in the reactant side and product side is not equal
  • When the number of HBr=2 the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side will be equal to the number of atoms of each element on the product side.
  • The balanced chemical equation is 2HBr+ZnCO3=ZnBr2+CO2+H2O

HBr+ZnCO3 Titration

Zinc carbonate and hydrobromic acid gives acid -base titration. The procedure for the titration is as follows

Apparatus used

Standard flask, Burette, Pipette, conical flask, stands, beakers, funnel

Reagents used

HBr, ZnCO3 Phenolphthalein indicator

Procedure

  • Wash all the apparatus thoroughly
  • Rinse the burette with Hydrobromic acid
  • Fill the burette with standard HBr solution
  • 10 ml  of  zinc carbonate whose concentration is to determine is pipetted out into a clean conical flask
  • Add two drops of phenolphthalein indicator, the color of the solution changes to pink
  • Titrate this solution against standard HBr solution till the solution becomes colorless
  • Note down the endpoint
  • The normality of the solution can be obtained by using the formula V1N1=V2N2

Where V1=Volume of zinc carbonate solution

             N1=Normality of zinc carbonate solution

             V2=Volume of HBr

             N2=Normality of HBr

HBr+ZnCO3 net ionic equation

The net ionic equation of HBr+ZnCO3 is

2H+ (aq) +ZnCO3(s)= Zn2+(aq)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)

HBr+ZnCO3 conjugate pairs

HBr and ZnCO3 has the following conjugate base pairs

  • Conjugate base of HBr is Br
  • Conjugate pair of H2O is OH

HBr+ZnCO3 intermolecular forces

Intermolecular force

HBr and ZnCO3 has the following intermolecular forces

  • The dipole dipole and dispersion force exist in HBr. Dipole-dipole forces arrive due to the difference in electronegativity between the atoms.
  • The ionic bond exists in Zinc carbonate. The ionic bond is present between Zinc and carbonates.

HBr+ZnCO3 reaction enthalpy?

The standard reaction enthalpy for the reaction of HBr and ZnCO3 is negative because the reaction is exothermic.

  • The standard enthalpy of formation of ZnCO3 is -817KJ/mol
  • The standard enthalpy of formation of HBr is -35.66KJ/mol

Is HBr+ZnCO3 a buffer solution?

HBr and ZnCO3 is not buffer solutions. Because HBr is a strong acid and ZnCO3 is a weak base.

Is HBr+ZnCO3 a complete reaction

HBr+ZnCO3 is a complete reaction, as no reactant is left at the end of the reaction.

Is HBr+ZnCO3  an exothermic reaction?

HBr+ZnCO3 is an exothermic reaction, because the value of change in Gibbs energy is negative.

Is HBr+ZnCO3 redox reaction?

HBr+ZnCO3 is not a redox reaction, since there is no change in the oxidation number.

Is HBr+ZnCO3 a precipitation reaction?

HBr+ZnCO3 is a precipitation reaction beacause the insoluble ZnCO3 is left at the end of the reaction.

Is HBr+ZnCO3 the irreversible reaction?

The reaction between the HBr and ZnCO3 is irreversible. Because it is unidirectional , it can not be reversed. The HBr and ZnCO3 react to form zinc bromide water and carbon dioxide, but the products do not react together to reform HBr and ZnCO3

Is HBr+ZnCO3 a displacement reaction?

HBr+ZnCO3 is a displacement reaction because Zn2+ is displaced by H+ forming corresponding ZnBr2, Zn2+ is also displaced by H+ to produce H2O and CO2.

Conclusion

The reaction between HBr and ZnCO3 is a double replacement reaction. Both zinc carbonate and Hydrobromic acid are used for industrial purposes.
