15 Facts on HBr + MnO2: What, How To Balance & FAQs

HBr and MnO2 are known as Hydrogen Bromide and Manganese dioxide respectively. These inorganic compounds will be discussed here. Let us know more about them.

HBr ( Hydrogen Bromide) also known as Hydrobromic acid is a colorless liquified gas with having strong, irritating odour. While MnO2 (Manganese dioxide) also known as Pyrolusite( an ore of Manganese) is a brownish-black powder.

Here we will study more about the reaction between HBr and MnO2, the type of reaction, buffer solution, the product formed, conjugate pair, reaction enthalpy, and much more.

What is the product of HBr and MnO2 ?

The product of HBr+MnO2 is Manganese (II) bromide (MnBr2), Dibromine (Br2), and water (H2O).
The reaction between HBr+MnO2 is as follows-
4HBr+MnO2→ MnBr2+Br2+2H20.

What type of reaction is HBr + MnO2 ?

HBr+MnO2 is a redox reaction as oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.

How to balance HBr and MnO2 ?

The reaction between HBr+MNO2 is given below which is not balanced.
HBr+MnO2→ MnBr2+Br2+H20
To balance the reaction we will follow these steps-

  • Use a variable to label each compound.
  • A system of equations for each compound.
  • Solving equation to get the value of the variable
  • Substitution of values
  • Verify both sides.

When both sides have an equal number of moles, then the reaction is balanced.
4HBr+MnO2→ MnBr2+Br2+2H20
This is the balanced reaction of HBr+MnO2

HBr + MnO2 titration

An acid-base titration is performed between HBr and MnO2 to estimate the strength of Hydrobromic acid. The procedure for titration is given below:-

Apparatus:

Burette, burette holder, pipette, distilled water, conical flask, volumetric flask, wash bottle, stirrer, and beakers.

Indicator:

Methyl orange is the indicator used.

Procedure:

  • Manganese oxide, soluble in water, and forms Mn(OH)2
  • 0.1 N freshly prepared Mn(OH)2 is taken in the burette.
  • 10 ml of HBr is pipetted out into a clean conical flask.
  • Add 1-2 drops of methyl orange indicator.
  • Add Mn(OH)2 drop wise from the burette into the conical flask with constant swirling until the appearance of light yellow colour. This is the end point of titration.
  • Note the volume of Mn(OH)2 required to neutralize the Hydrobromic acid solution.
  • The above procedure is repeated for 3 consistent readings.
  • The strength of HBr is calculated using the reaction. SMn(OH)2 VMn(OH)2 = SHBr VHBr

HBr and MnO2 net ionic equation

  • The net ionic equation between HBr+MnO2 reaction
  • 4HBr(aq)+MnO2(s)→ MnBr2(aq)+Br2(l)+2H20
  • Which
  • can be demonstrated as follows after removing repeated entities from both reactant and product side.
  • Thus getting the net ionic reaction of HBr+MnO2
  • MnO2(s) + 4H+ +2Br → Mn2++Br2(l) + 2H2O(aq)

HBr and MnO2 conjugate pairs

The conjugate acid-base pairs of HBr and MnO2 are as follows:-

The conjugate acid-base pairs of HBr is Br and MnO2 is an amphoteric oxide hence it doesn’t show conjugate acid-base pair.

HBr and MnO2 intermolecular forces

The following intermolecular forces are present in HBr and MnO2 :-

The intermolecular force in HBr is dipole-dipole force as it is polar in nature.. While MnO2 have ionic interactions as intermolecular forces in it.

HBr and MnO2 reaction enthalpy

The reaction enthalpy of HBr+MnO2 is −2,537.54kJ/mol. Since the reaction enthalpy is in negative it indicates that energy is given out during the reaction.

CompoundEnthalpy (kJ/mol)
MnO2-520.3
HBr436
MnBr2-285.83
Br20
H2O-241.820
Reaction enthalpy of compounds

HBr and MnO2 a buffer solution

HBr+MnO2 is not a buffer solution. Because HBr is a strong acid while MnO2 is a basic oxide. The combination of weak acid and salt mark as buffer solution which doesn’t occur here.

Is HBr and MnO2 a complete reaction?

HBr+MnO2 is not a complete reaction. As the precipitate of MnO2 remains in the reaction, making it incomplete.

Is HBr and MnO2 an exothermic or endothermic reaction?

HBr+MnO2 reaction is an exothermic reaction as energy is given out during the reaction. The negative enthalpy indicates the release of energy thus making it exothermic in nature.

Is HBr and MnO2 a redox reaction?

HBr+MnO2 is a redox reaction as MnO2 is reduced to Mn2+ by HBr and oxidizing self to Br2 i.e. molecular bromine. As both oxidation and reduction are occurring simultaneously in this reaction, it is Redox reaction. In simple terms HBr acts as reducing agent and MnO2 as oxidizing agent in this reaction.

Is HBr and MnO2 a precipitation reaction?

HBr+MnO2 is a precipitation reaction as MnO2 is insoluble in HBr. It forms a brownish precipitate which remains in the reaction.

Is HBr and MnO2 reversible or irreversible reaction?

HBr+MnO2 is an irreversible reaction because the products formed cannot be retained back and it takes place in one way.

Is HBr and MnO2 displacement reaction?

HBr+MnO2 is not a displacement reaction, as there is no switching of elements from compound to form product.

Conclusion

Hydrobromic acid or hydrogen Bromide is a colorless gas freely soluble in water.MnO2 also known as Pyrolusite an ore of manganese is widely used in the manufacturing of ceramics, also in component of different batteries. The reaction between HBr+MnO2 leads to the formation of liquid bromine which is used in agriculture chemicals.
