Hassium Electron Configuration: Everything You Need to Know

Hassium belongs to group 8 and 7th period of the periodic table. It is a chemical element. Hassium is represented by the symbol Hs. The atomic number of hassium is 108.

The electronic configuration for hassium is 1s2  2s2  2p6  3s2  3p6  4s2 3d10  4p6  5s2 4d10  5p6  6s2 4f14  5d10 6p6  7s2 5f14  6d6. Hassium is classified as a transition metal, Hassium is a solid at room temperature. Hassium is a radioactive element.

The most stable isotopes of hassium have half-lives of around ten seconds. It has a Simple Hexagonal structure. Let us see more about its configuration facts in this article.

How to write hassium electron configuration?

  • The electronic configuration for hassium is
  • 1s2  2s2  2p6  3s2  3p6  4s2 3d10  4p6  5s2 4d10  5p6  6s2 4f14  5d10 6p6  7s2 5f14  6d6
  • According to Aufbau’s principle, orbitals are filled with electrons in the order of their increasing energy. Filling of orbitals start from 1s because it has the lowest energy of all the available orbitals.
  • Energy orbitals must be first filled as per Hund’s rule.
  • The spin of electrons in a particular orbital is determined by using Pauli’s exclusion principle.
  • The representation of an electron can be done using a subscript. For example, 3d5; here 5 represent number of electrons in d-orbital.

Hassium electron configuration diagram

Hs has 108 electrons and all the electrons should be placed in the respective electronic shell as per the above three principles,

  • First, 1s will be filled by two electrons as it has lower energy and it has one orbital, and each orbital consists maximum of two electrons with opposite spin and then 2s orbital will be filled by two electrons as per energy order, after that 2p orbital will be filled as per energy order and it has three orbitals so it can accumulate a maximum of six electrons.
  • After 2p, the 3s orbital is filled by two electrons as per higher energy than the previous one and then 3p orbital will be filled by six electrons as it has three orbitals and more energy.
  • After 3p, the 4s orbital will be filled by two electrons as it has higher energy for a higher principle quantum number and then 3d orbital will be filled due to effective nuclear charge and shielding effect it has higher energy than 4s and the 3d orbital has five subshells so it can accumulate a maximum of ten electrons.
  • After 3d, the 4p orbital will be filled by six electrons and then 5s orbital is filled by two electrons as per energy. After 4p and 5s, the 4d orbital is filled by a maximum of ten electrons as it has more energy than 5s and then 5p orbital is filled by the six electrons.
  • After 4d and 5p, the 6s orbital is filled by two electrons and then 4f orbital will be filled by a maximum of 14 electrons as f orbital contains seven subshells and due to poor screening effect, it has more energy than the former. After 6s and 4f, the 5d orbital will be filled by 10 electrons and then 6p orbital will be filled by the six electrons.
  • After 5d and 6p, the 7s orbital is filled by two electrons and then 5f orbital will be filled by a maximum of 14 electrons as f orbital contains seven subshells and due to poor screening effect, it has more energy than the former and lastly, the 6d orbital is filled by the remaining six electron.
  • So, all the 108 electrons will be filled in the diagram will be –
