Exchange reaction is defined as one type of chemical reaction in which cations and anions present in reactants are interchanged in product side. Products that are formed due to exchange reaction must be electrically neutral species.

Stability on the product side with comparing to reactant side is the driving force of exchange reaction.

Precipitation Reaction between Sodium Chloride and Silver Nitrate

Precipitation reaction is one type of double exchange reaction in which two reactants (basically ionic compound) in aqueous solution combine with each other and an insoluble salt is obtained as product. This insoluble salt cannot be dissolved in solution and remains as precipitate.

For example-

NaCl (aq) + AgNO3 (aq) NaNO3 (aq)+ AgCl (s)

In this above reaction sodium chloride (NaCl) reacts with silver nitrate (AgNO3) to form the white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) and soluble sodium nitrate (NaNO3).

Precipitation reaction between Calcium Chloride and Potassium Hydroxide

In this type of precipitation reaction Ca2+ from calcium chloride and OH- from KOH combine to form the precipitate of calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2.

CaCl2 (aq) + KOH (aq) Ca(OH)2 (s) + KCl (aq)

Neutralization Reaction

Neutralization reaction takes place between acid and base. In this exchange reaction, acid gets neutralized and form salt along with water. For example,

HCl (aq) + KOH (aq) KCl (aq) + H2O (l)

In this exchange reaction, H+ ion of hydrochloric acid is exchanged with the OHion of potassium hydroxide and chloride ion (Cl) from HCl is exchanged with K+ ion comes from KOH.

Gas Evolution Reaction between Zinc and Concentrated Sulphuric Acid

A gas evolution reaction is defined as one of the exchange reactions in which gas (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide) is obtained as one product.

There are numerous examples in which gaseous product is obtained.

When any metal reacts with any concentrated acid, hydrogen gas is evolved from reaction medium.

Gas Evolution Reaction between Sodium Sulphide and Hydrochloric Acid

This is also an example of exchange reaction in which gas is evolved from reaction medium as a product. In this case dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium sulfide (Na2S) and sulphur dioxide gas (SO2) is evolved along with sodium chloride salt.

Exchange Reaction between Ester and Carboxyl Group

This type of exchange reaction is known as acidolysis and opposite of alcoholysis reaction.  In this reaction, oil combines with dibasic acid in first stage and in 2nd stage polyl is participated in reaction at high temperature without catalyst. This method of acidolysis is limited in polybasic acid like terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid. These acids remain insoluble in monoglyceride until the completion of esterification.

Hydrogen Isotope Exchange Reaction

Isotopic exchange reaction is one type of exchange reaction in which ion and molecule participate and they have the ability to transfer heavy isotope between molecules at low temperature in the energy difference of energy equal to zero point energy between reactant and product.
