Ccl3f Lewis Structure, Characteristics:13 Must To Know Facts


Trichlorofluoromethane (CCl3F) also known as Freon-11 is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and is used as a refrigerant. So, they are also called Refrigerant-11. CCl3F cause ozone depletion.

In CCl3F Lewis structure carbon atom is bonded to 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom by sigma bond and has no lone pair of electrons. it is sp3 hybridised with tetrahedral shape and the compound is polar in nature.

Ccl3f valence electrons       

CCl3F compound has 32 valence electrons (4 from carbon 28 electrons from 3 Cl and 1 F atoms).

Electronic configuration of C atom is [He] 2s2 2p2. So, there are 4 electrons in valence shell of carbon atom. Electronic configuration of F atom is [He] 2s2 2p5. So, there are 7 electrons in valence shell of F atom and of Cl atom is[Ne] 3s2 3p5. So, there are 7 electrons in the outer most shell of Cl atom.

The total valence electron of CCl3F = 4 + 3 (7) + 7 = 4+21+7 = 32

How to draw Ccl3f Lewis structure?

 Ccl3f lewis structure is drawn by pairing of valence electrons of C with 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom.

1)Know the total number of valence electrons of the compound

There is total 32 valence electrons present in CCl3F

2)Determine the central atom and place the remaining atoms around the central atom

The least electronegative atom is selected as the central atom so C is the least electronegative atom in CCl3F and the remaining 3 Cl and 1F atom is placed around the central atom C which is placed at the center.

3)Central atom is singly bonded to surrounding atoms by pairing its electrons.

C is bonded to 3 Cl atoms and 1F atom by pairing of its electrons forming a sigma bond. A total of 8 electrons are used for bond formation.

4)Place the remaining valence electrons on the atoms to complete its octet

Out of 32 electrons 24 electrons are remaining after bond formation. Thus, each outer atoms (3 Cl and 1F) will take 6 electrons each from 24 electrons and thus complete its octet.

5)Count the number of electrons on each atom.

Central atom C has 8 electrons from 4 single bonds formed with 3 Cl and 1F atoms.3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom have 8 electrons each (6 nonbonding and 2 bonding electrons)

Ccl3f Lewis structure lone pairs

In CCl3F the central atom C does not have any lone pair of electrons because it has used its 4 valence electrons for sigma bond formation with 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom.

The outer atoms 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom each have 3 lone pair of electrons (6 non-bonding electrons) in its outermost shell.

Ccl3f Lewis structure octet rule

All the atoms 1C atom 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom in the compound have satisfied their octet.

 The central atom carbon belongs to period 2 in the period table and have 2s and 2p orbitals which can accommodate a total of 8 electrons. C already has 4 electrons in its valence shell and require only 4 electrons to complete its octet and it gets 4 electrons by bonding with 3 Cl and 1 F atom.

The 3 Cl and 1 F atom have 7 electrons in its valence shell and require only 1 electron to complete its octet and they get it by singly bonding with C atom.

Ccl3f Lewis structure formal charge

The formal charge of central atom C is 0 and the surrounding 2 Cl and 1 F atoms is also 0.

Formal charge on an atom in a Lewis structure = total no. of valence electrons in the free atom -the total number of non-bonding (lone pair) electrons -half the total number of bonding electrons.

Formal charge of carbon atom

Total number of valence electrons in C atom = 4

Total number of non-bonding electrons = o

Total number of bonding electrons = 8

 Formal charge = 4 – 0 – 8/2 =4 – 0 – 4 = 0

Therefore, the formal charge of C atom is = 0

Formal charge of 3 chlorine atoms

Total number of valence electrons in Cl atom = 7

Total number of non-bonding electrons = 6

Total number of bonding electrons = 2

Formal charge = 7-6- 2/2 =7 – 7 = 0

Therefore, formal charge of Cl atom is = 0

Formal charge for 3 Cl atoms in the compound is same

Formal charge of F atom

Total number of valence electrons in F atom = 7

Total number of non-bonding electrons = 6

Total number of bonding electrons = 2

 Formal charge = 7 – 6 – 2/2 = 7-7=0

Ccl3f hybridization

CCl3F show sp3 hybridization.

As the central carbon atom is bonded to 3 Cl atoms and 1 F atom by sigma bond and there is no lone pair of electrons in C. So, from VSEPR theory

Static number = ½ [number of valence electrons] + [number of monovalent atoms attached to central atom] – [cationic charge] + [anionic charge]

 steric number of CCl3F = ½ [4] + [4-0-0]

                                                = ½ [4 + 4] =8/2 = 4

So, steric number of CCl3F is 4. Therefore, it is sp3 hybridised

As CCl3F is sp3 hybridised will have tetrahedral shape with tetrahedral molecular geometry.

CCl3F is of the type AB4 (A is the central atom and B is the outer atoms bonded to central atom) with no lone pair of electrons so it is tetrahedral shaped but due to the electronegativity difference between Cl and F atom it will have a distorted geometry.

The bond angle of CCl3F compound is around 109.5o

CCl3F have tetrahedral shape and its bond angle should be 109.5o but due to the electronegativity difference between Cl and F and the smaller size of F compared to Cl the bond angle will be slightly different.

Ccl3f lewis structure does not have a resonance structure

For a compound to show resonance should be sp2 or sp hybridized and have a conjugated system but CCl3F is sp3 hybridized with no delocalized electrons so it doesn’t show resonance.

Is Ccl3f ionic?

CCl3F is not ionic. It is a covalent compound.

Having low boiling point or freezing point is a characteristics of a covalent compound

The Boiling Point of the compound is found to be 23.77oC which is comparatively very low and also the bond formed between C and 3 Cl and 1 F atom is a covalent bond formed by sharing of electrons making the compound covalent.

Is Ccl3f polar or nonpolar?

 CCl3F is a polar compound.

Structure of CCl3F is asymmetric and also there is an electronegativity difference between the Cl and F atom so the net dipole moment will not be zero making the compound polar

Ccl3f solubility

Solubility of CCl3F in water is 1.1g/L at 20o C

 The compounds that are soluble water can be washed out from atmosphere by precipitation but CCl3F is not removed from the atmosphere it means they are not soluble in water and also they are long lived and so they eventually reach the stratosphere layer

Is Ccl3f acidic or basic?

CCl3F is highly stable and are considered inert so they are neither basic nor acidic.

But when they are in the stratosphere layer and comes in contact with ozone undergo uv photolysis and release chlorine atoms which causes ozone depletion.

Conclusion –

From the above discussion we can conclude that there are 32 valence electrons in CCl3F and there is no lone pair of electrons in C atom. They are sp3 hybridised with tetrahedral shape and the compound is polar in nature.
